Pushya Nakshatra: Traits, Career, Marriage & Auspicious Dates

How this guide was made

Written by me from my own consultation practice. Nakshatra attributes are checked against the classical texts named in each section (Taittiriya Brahmana, Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Muhurta Chintamani). Every date and time was cross-checked with Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Where sources disagree, I say so rather than pick one silently. I’ll update the date tables each year.

Quick answer

Pushya Nakshatra is the 8th of the 27 nakshatras. It spans 3°20′ to 16°40′ of Cancer (Karka rashi). Its planetary lord is Saturn (Shani), its deity is Brihaspati, the guru of the gods, and its main symbol is a cow’s udder. Pushya means “to nourish”. It is considered the most auspicious nakshatra for starting things and buying gold, and it is especially powerful when it falls on a Thursday (Guru Pushya) or a Sunday (Ravi Pushya). The next Pushya begins at 12:50 PM on 28 November 2026 (New Delhi).

What is Pushya Nakshatra?

Pushya Nakshatra (पुष्य नक्षत्र) is the eighth lunar mansion in Vedic astrology. The name comes from the Sanskrit root push, meaning to nourish or make strong. Its other names, Tishya (auspicious) and Sidhya (that which brings success), say the same thing. It is the star of support, care and steady growth.

In the sky, Pushya corresponds to three faint stars in the body of the Cancer constellation: Gamma, Delta and Theta Cancri. Delta Cancri lies close to the Praesepe star cluster. When people say “my nakshatra is Pushya”, they mean the Moon was passing through this 13°20′ segment of the zodiac when they were born. (New to nakshatras? Start with my complete list of the 27 nakshatras.)

Because the Moon passes through all 27 nakshatras in about 27.3 days, Pushya comes back roughly once a month for about 22 to 26 hours. That is why searches like “Pushya Nakshatra kab hai” spike every month, and why I’ve listed every date for the rest of 2026 and all of 2027 below.

Pushya sits entirely inside Cancer (Karka rashi), so every Pushya native has the Moon in Cancer. The Moon is strongest in its own sign, which is one reason this nakshatra is linked with emotional warmth, caring and the instinct to protect.

Where sources differ

Some websites list the deity as Hanuman, but the classical deity of Pushya is Brihaspati, as given in the Taittiriya Brahmana’s list of nakshatra devatas. The yoni is given as “goat” or “sheep”. Both translate the Sanskrit mesha, so the two are the same. The guna is listed as Tamas in the traditional three-level scheme. Writers who call it sattvic are describing its devotional character, not the formal classification.

Lord, deity and symbol: why both Saturn and Jupiter matter

This is the part most articles skip, and it explains the whole personality of Pushya.

The lord

Saturn (Shani)

In the Vimshottari dasha system set out in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Pushya is one of Saturn’s three nakshatras (with Anuradha and Uttara Bhadrapada). Saturn brings discipline, patience, duty and endurance.

The deity

Brihaspati (Jupiter)

Jupiter as Brihaspati is the teacher, priest and counsellor of the gods. He gives wisdom, faith, ritual knowledge and the wish to guide others.

The symbol

The cow’s udder

The cow feeds her calf, and also feeds a household that is not her own, without asking for anything back. That is Pushya: it nourishes.

Pushya natives start life in Saturn Mahadasha, and the length of the balance depends on how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra at birth. That is why many of them describe a serious, responsible childhood.

Put the two together and you get Pushya’s signature: wisdom delivered through hard work. Jupiter gives the knowledge, and Saturn makes it practical, patient and long-lasting. In Cancer, ruled by the Moon, the result is caring that is steady rather than dramatic. And Jupiter is exalted at 5° Cancer, inside Pushya’s span, which adds to the nakshatra’s reputation as blessed.

Pushya Nakshatra personality traits

Strengths
  • Protective and caring. Pushya people look after family, colleagues and even strangers. They are often the person others call in a crisis.
  • Responsible beyond their age. Saturn’s influence makes them dependable, punctual and serious about commitments.
  • Respect for tradition and learning. Brihaspati’s blessing shows up as an interest in scripture, teachers, rituals and family values.
  • Patient builders. They prefer slow, safe growth to quick wins. Savings, property and long careers suit them.
  • Calm in public. Even when worried, they rarely show panic. This makes them good managers and counsellors.
Challenges
  • Over-giving. They can give until they are empty, then feel unappreciated.
  • Rigidity. Saturn and tradition can turn into “my way is the right way”, especially about religion, food or family rules.
  • Worry and self-doubt. A Moon-ruled sign with a Saturn lord can carry a quiet, constant worry about security.
  • Holding on. Cancer is a crab. Pushya natives can hold on to old hurts, old homes and old habits longer than is healthy.

Pushya Nakshatra male traits

Pushya men are typically the pillar of the family. They take responsibility early, often support parents or siblings, and are respected for their honesty. Many are drawn to religion, law, teaching or government work. Their struggle is usually with expressing feelings: they show love through providing, not through words. In early years, health and education can feel like an uphill climb. Things tend to settle and improve after their early thirties as Saturn’s lessons mature.

Pushya Nakshatra female traits

Pushya women are nurturing, dignified and quietly strong. They are often called “the backbone of the family”, and they handle home, work and elders’ care at the same time. Many are well educated and principled, with a strong sense of right and wrong. Their main challenge is putting their own needs last. In my experience, Pushya women do best when they set clear boundaries and accept help without guilt.

A note on what you read online: some websites describe Pushya men as “emotionally weak” or say Pushya women will “never find peace”. A single nakshatra never decides your fate like that. Your Lagna, the Moon’s strength, house placements and dashas all change how Pushya shows up. Use these traits as tendencies, not verdicts.

The four padas of Pushya and their name letters

Each nakshatra is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3°20′. Each pada falls in a different navamsa sign, so it changes the flavour of the nakshatra. It also gives the first syllable traditionally used for a baby’s name.

Pushya Nakshatra career and money

Pushya’s mix of Saturn (structure), Brihaspati (knowledge) and the Moon (care) points to careers that serve, teach, protect or feed people.

FieldWhy it suits Pushya
Teaching, academia, coachingBrihaspati is the guru, so explaining and guiding feels natural
Priesthood, astrology, spiritual counsellingInterest in ritual, scripture and helping others
Government service, public administration, lawSaturn rewards rules, duty and long service
Medicine, nursing, nutrition, AyurvedaThe “nourishment” symbol of the cow’s udder
Food, dairy, hotels, cateringThe nourishing role in literal form
Banking, finance, real estate, insurancePatient builders who protect assets
Social work, NGOs, child and elder careThe urge to protect the vulnerable
HR and people managementCalm, fair, trusted by teams

Job or business? Most Pushya natives do better in a stable job or a family business first. Business on their own usually works after they have built capital and experience, often after age 32 to 36, when Saturn’s lessons have paid off.

Money style: slow and steady. Pushya people are savers. They do well with gold, fixed deposits, land and long-term investments rather than speculation. Many earn their best income in the second half of life.

Pushya Nakshatra love, marriage and compatibility

In relationships, Pushya natives are loyal, protective and family-focused. They want a partner who respects their family and values. Once committed, they rarely walk away, sometimes even when they should.

Common relationship patterns:

  • Marriage can come slightly late, or after the native has taken care of family duties first.
  • They express love through care and responsibility more than romance.
  • A partner who is too impulsive or careless with money can test their patience.

Compatibility table (Gana, Yoni and Nadi)

Of the eight factors in Ashta Koota matching, three are most useful for a quick check:

FactorPushya valueBest matchesNeeds care
Gana (temperament, 6 points)DevaOther Deva nakshatras: Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, RevatiRakshasa-gana nakshatras such as Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Moola
Yoni (physical and sexual harmony, 4 points)Goat (male)Krittika (female goat) is the ideal yoni partnerMonkey yoni (Shravana, Purva Ashadha) is traditionally hostile to goat
Nadi (health and progeny, 8 points)MadhyaAdi or Antya nadi partnersSame Madhya nadi gives Nadi dosha. Madhya-nadi nakshatras include Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha, Dhanishta, Uttara Bhadrapada
Quick check

Pushya compatibility checker

Pick your partner’s birth nakshatra to see how Gana, Yoni and Nadi line up with Pushya.

Generally harmonious overall: Rohini, Hasta, Revati, Shravana, Ashwini and Punarvasu often score well with Pushya, but always check the full chart. Factors pull in different directions: Krittika is the best yoni match but a different gana, and Anuradha shares the gana but also the nadi.

That is exactly why I never give a yes or no from the nakshatra alone. A Kundli reading checks all eight kootas, Manglik status and the 7th house before a decision.

Why Pushya Nakshatra is not used for wedding muhurta

This surprises most people. Pushya is called the “king of nakshatras” and is the best day for buying gold or starting a business, yet most muhurta traditions leave Pushya out of the list of nakshatras chosen for vivah (marriage).

You can see this in the classical muhurta text Muhurta Chintamani (Daivajna Rama, 1600 CE). Its list of nakshatras for vivah is Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati, and Pushya is not on it.

The traditional explanation is a Puranic story. Brahma is said to have been infatuated with his daughter Saraswati at the time of Pushya, and the nakshatra was cursed so that it would not be used for marriages. Whatever you make of the story, the practical rule in most North and South Indian panchangs is the same: Pushya is excellent for everything except the wedding ceremony itself.

Two clarifications:

  1. Being born in Pushya is not a problem for marriage. The rule is about the date chosen for the wedding, not the bride’s or groom’s birth star.
  2. Engagements, buying wedding jewellery and starting wedding shopping on Pushya are very popular. Only the pheras/muhurta is avoided.

Guru Pushya and Ravi Pushya Yoga

Gold coins, silver utensils, a new account book and a lit diya arranged for Guru Pushya Yoga

When Pushya Nakshatra falls on a Thursday, it forms Guru Pushya Yoga (also called Guru Pushyamrut Yoga). Thursday is ruled by Jupiter, and Pushya’s deity is Brihaspati (Jupiter), so the day’s ruler and the nakshatra’s deity are the same planet. Many consider this the single most auspicious muhurta for buying gold, starting studies, beginning a spiritual practice or opening a business.

When Pushya falls on a Sunday, it forms Ravi Pushya Yoga, which is especially favoured for buying vehicles, property and electronics, and for starting medicine or health routines.

The sunrise rule that confuses everyone

In the panchang, a day runs from sunrise to the next sunrise, not midnight to midnight. So if Pushya starts at 1:51 AM on a Friday, that time still belongs to Thursday’s panchang day, and it counts as Guru Pushya. That is why yoga timings look different from the raw nakshatra timings above.

What to do (and avoid) on Pushya Nakshatra

Traditionally good on Pushya
  • Buying gold, silver, jewellery and new utensils (very popular before Diwali, Dhanteras and weddings)
  • Buying property, a vehicle or electronics, especially on Ravi Pushya
  • Opening a bank account, starting an investment or SIP
  • Starting a business, signing contracts, launching a shop
  • Beginning studies, Vidyarambh, a new course or learning a mantra
  • Starting medicine or Ayurvedic treatment. Suvarnaprashan for children is traditionally given on Pushya
  • Griha pravesh (in many traditions) and installing a yantra or deity at home
  • Donating food, milk or yellow items, and serving teachers and elders
Traditionally avoided
  • The wedding ceremony itself (see why)
  • Starting anything during Rahu Kaal, even on a Pushya day. Check the day’s Rahu Kaal before you go shopping
  • Harsh or destructive acts such as demolition, ending relationships or quarrels, since Pushya is a nurturing star

Remedies for Pushya Nakshatra natives

Remedies are only needed if the Moon or Saturn is weak or troubled in your chart. If you’re not sure, have the chart checked first.

  1. Honour your teachers. Serving teachers, elders and priests strengthens Brihaspati, Pushya’s deity.
  2. Saturday discipline. Light a sesame oil diya, feed the poor or donate black sesame on Saturdays for Saturn, Pushya’s lord.
  3. Mantras:
    • Nakshatra mantra: Om Brihaspataye Namah
    • Saturn: Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah (108 times on Saturdays)
    • For the Moon (Cancer): Om Som Somaya Namah on Mondays
  4. Feed cows or donate milk. This honours the cow’s-udder symbol and is a simple, everyday remedy.
  5. Water the Peepal tree on Saturdays. It is Pushya’s nakshatra tree.
  6. Gemstones: Blue Sapphire (for Saturn) is powerful but can be harsh. Never wear it without a full chart check. Some charts need Pearl (Moon) or Yellow Sapphire (Jupiter) instead. A gentler Saturn support many people prefer is the 7 Mukhi Rudraksha.

How I read Pushya in a chart

When a client tells me “I’m Pushya Nakshatra”, that is where my reading starts, not where it ends. These are the five things I check, in this order:

  1. Which pada the Moon is in. A pada 1 (Leo navamsa) Pushya behaves very differently from a pada 4 (Scorpio navamsa) Pushya. Pada 1 seeks recognition. Pada 4 goes deep and private. This one detail changes most of the “traits” you read online.
  2. How strong the Moon is. Pushya is in the Moon’s own sign, but a Moon near Rahu or Ketu, in a dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th house), or very close to the Sun (around Amavasya) gives the worry and over-giving side of Pushya more than the nurturing side.
  3. Saturn’s condition. Saturn is Pushya’s lord, so its house, sign and aspects tell me whether the “discipline pays off” promise is delivered early or late in life.
  4. Jupiter. Jupiter is the deity’s planet and is exalted in Cancer. A strong Jupiter is the clearest sign of the teacher, counsellor or priest type of Pushya native.
  5. The dasha balance at birth. Every Pushya native starts in Saturn Mahadasha. How many years were left at birth explains a lot about childhood, which is often the first thing clients want to talk about.

Only after these five checks do I suggest remedies. Most Pushya natives need fewer remedies than they expect. Usually the work is rebalancing how much they give.

From my readings

A typical case (composite)

A Pushya-Moon client in her late thirties came to me feeling “used up” after years of looking after her in-laws, her children and her team at work. Her chart showed a strong Saturn but a Moon under pressure. The remedy was not a gemstone. It was rebuilding her routine around Monday Moon practices, setting one clear boundary at home, and taking her Saturday seva outside the family. Within a few months she described feeling “like myself again”. That is typical Pushya: the cure is learning to nourish yourself too.

Composite of several readings; details changed for privacy.

Conclusion

Pushya Nakshatra is the star of nourishment: Brihaspati’s wisdom, given form by Saturn’s patience, inside the caring sign of Cancer. If you were born under it, your gift is being the person others can lean on. Your lesson is to let yourself be supported too. And if you’re simply planning a purchase or a new start, the Pushya, Guru Pushya and Ravi Pushya dates above are among the most trusted windows in the Hindu calendar.
